Recovery Time: Da Vinci Hysterectomy Versus A Traditional Hysterectomy

Blog

A hysterectomy may be in your future due to heavy menstrual cycles, fibroids, endometriosis or other gynecological problems. Many women dread this type of surgery because they don't have time in their busy schedules for a long recovery. They may put off visiting their gynecologist because they hope the problem will disappear over time. Generally, this is not the case, and prolonging the situation may make matters worse.

Recuperative Period for a Traditional Hysterectomy

A traditional hysterectomy typically means that the woman will spend two days in the hospital recovering from this major surgery. After the woman is released, the recovery time spent at home is generally 6-to-8 weeks.

Recovering from a Da Vinci Hysterectomy

A Da Vinci hysterectomy generally requires an overnight stay in the hospital. A doctor uses a machine -- similar to a robot -- to do the surgery. This machine uses specialized surgical tools that can flex and rotate in many ways that a surgeon's hand cannot.  Once the patient recuperates at home for 2 weeks, she is usually cleared to go back to work.

Deciding on the Type of Surgery

Only your doctor can determine which surgery type is the best option for you. Although a traditional hysterectomy involves a larger incision, it is often necessary if there are multiple problems that must be corrected during the operation. If you are unhappy with the physician's recommendations, call another surgeon to make an appointment. Many insurance policies will give the okay for a second opinion.

Ensuring that You Recover Properly

There are risks with any type of surgery. The best way to ensure that you heal properly is to follow your surgeon's advice and return for a post-op visit as scheduled. Physicians often recommend that you don't lift heavy objects, engage in sexual intercourse or take tub baths until you are cleared to go back to work. He or she will also recommend that you take it easy and get an abundance of rest during the recovery. Some doctors will release you to go back to work with limitations. For instance, he or she may instruct you not to lift anything over a particular weight limit for a while. The surgeon may also ask you to return on a part-time basis, temporarily. This usually depends on how well you recover after the operation.

Remember that no matter how busy you are, your health must be your number one priority. Trying to speed up your recovery by doing too much, too quickly may cause you significant harm.
